In or Out: Where Should You Focus Your Home Improvement Efforts?

By February 26, 2015January 22nd, 2016Home Improvement

We have all heard about the best places to spend your home improvement budget when you’re hoping to get some of your investment back when you sell your house. Is it in the kitchen or the bathroom? Well, those are always good bets, but is it always the best choice to focus on the inside of the house? We have seen some pretty convincing evidence that the home’s exterior may be the best choice for your hard-earned dollars.

Wondering where to start? Here are some ideas for exterior renovations that really sell… homes on the market. Of course we’re not suggesting you brave the cold to start your exterior renovation project RIGHT NOW, this is just some food for thought for the spring.

Decks and Patios

3682789.jpgSome of the greatest memories of summer start on the deck in a backyard just like yours. It’s where burgers are grilled and the kids are sent to play in the sprinkler in the grass while the grown-ups catch up. It’s also one of the first things prospective home owners look for when they’re making a purchase decision. If you don’t have a deck, consider adding one. If you do have a deck but it has seen better days, think about updating it this year.

Exterior Finishes

The roof may be first thing that springs to mind when it comes to exterior home improvements, but there are a lot of benefits to be found in the finishing system too. For example, a fresh coat of parging around the foundation helps protect it from the elements. And a stucco finish can dramatically change the appearance of a home without the drastic step of rebuilding. It’s a solid investment in the curb appeal of your house.

Doors and Windows

High-quality doors and windows are expensive, but worth it. You will save money on energy costs all year with a good set of windows and doors that have been properly installed. It won’t be enough to offset the cost of the replacements, but you can’t really put a price tag on the relief that comes when you no longer feel cold air streaming into the living room around that window. Upgraded windows and doors are often high on the list of wants for prospective new home owners, too.

It seems that when it comes to home improvements, outside is where it’s at. Of course we’re somewhat biased because we are experts in parging and stucco exterior finishes in Edmonton and the surrounding area, but it is really sound advice to focus on what’s outside.
