3 Things to Think About When Replacing Exterior Finishes

By June 19, 2015September 6th, 2016Home Improvement, Parging

We’ve always heard that it is what’s inside that counts, and that may well be true for people. However, when it comes to your home, what’s outside is just as important. The primary function of the exterior finishes of your home is protecting everything on the inside, and sometimes those finishes need some protection of their own. For example, shingles protect the roof and parging protects the foundation.3 Things to Think About When Replacing Exterior Finishes

Because exterior finishes are exposed to all the elements, all year round, they need replacement from time to time. This is especially true in harsh climates like the one here in Edmonton.

If you’re ready to make a big change, like replacing any of the exterior finishes of your home, we have a few things you should keep in mind.

Check Local Regulations

Any reputable contractor should be familiar with the rules and regulations regarding permits in your local area. However, if a building inspector comes a ’knocking, it’s going to be on YOUR door, not theirs. Knowing the basics, like whether or not your home is in an area where the rules about heritage properties apply, is always a good idea.

Taste Matters

It’s your house, and your personal tastes are definitely an important factor in your decisions about how it looks. Having said that, don’t underestimate the importance of a look that is consistent with the homes in the area. A bright purple house with a hot pink roof may float your boat, and your house will certainly stand out, but perhaps not for the reasons you’d hoped it would. If your house sticks out like a sore thumb, it’s going to affect the resale value of your property, and of the properties around you. It could make the block party pretty awkward.

Always Choose Quality

When buying a house, common wisdom dictates that you should always buy as much house as you can afford. The same wisdom holds true when it comes to purchasing the exterior finishes that protect that house from the elements. You’ll never regret the decision to pay a little extra for higher quality materials, but you may regret the long-term implications of choosing flimsy materials further down the road.
