New concrete foundations are functional, but they are not always a finished-looking exterior surface. Form marks, tie locations, colour variation, patches and rough areas can remain visible after construction. Parging is one way to give the exposed foundation a consistent cementitious finish.
If you are looking at a new home, addition or unfinished foundation in Edmonton, here are four practical reasons to consider new foundation parging.

1. Parging Creates a More Finished Appearance
Raw poured concrete and masonry can vary significantly in colour and texture. Parging creates one continuous finished surface across the exposed portion of the foundation and gives the base of the house a cleaner, more consistent appearance.
2. It Covers Normal Surface Irregularities
Concrete foundations commonly have form lines, small surface voids, patching and other visual irregularities. A properly prepared cementitious parge coat can create a more uniform surface without treating those cosmetic imperfections as structural problems.
3. It Creates a Serviceable Exterior Finish
Parging becomes the visible finish at the base of the building and can be maintained or renewed later if needed. It is not waterproofing, insulation or structural reinforcement, but it provides a practical cementitious finish over exposed concrete or masonry.
4. It Can Be Repaired or Recoated Later
Like other exterior finishes, parging can eventually be damaged by impact, movement, moisture exposure or weathering. Defined areas may be suitable for localized parging repair. If a wall develops widespread deterioration later, it can be recoated from corner to corner for a more consistent finish.
What About ICF Foundations?
ICF is different from conventional concrete because the exposed surface is foam rather than a direct masonry substrate. Our ICF parging uses a reinforced cementitious assembly with galvanized metal lath mechanically fastened to the ICF structure.
